Eternal City is a side scrolling action game by Naxat Soft.
The player takes control of powerful mecha-suit called the Argyderos
piloted by the female fighter Minty Geile. She
starts her journey armed with a traditional Vulcan gun
but numerous weapons can be collected throughout the game,
such as the Neddle Laser, Sonic Wave, Ring
Cannon, Terra Buster and so forth (weapons as
well as upgrades can be switched at any time through
a selection menu, activated by pressing 'select').
Most of the weapons have a limited firepower though and they rapidly decrease
if the player holds the trigger for too long (the yellow gauge
at the bottom of the screen indicates the current weapon's
firepower). The Argyderos can also later equip a
back booster allowing it to fly around the
environment or dash forward at high speed. All of the weapons
and special items are located inside station rooms scattered
throughout the game. These stations also give away shield and
weapon containers as well as passwords, allowing
the player to save his progress.
Levels in Eternal City are vast maze-like areas
with dead-ends and misleading corridors, each culminating
with a boss battle.

Parts of Eternal City were designed by Masamune Shirow (better known
for his other works such as Ghost in the Shell,
Appleseed, Black Magic or Dominion Tank Police). More than being a mangaka and
an illustrator, Masamune Shirow also helped to design many other games such as
Trinea (Super Famicom, 1993) or
Ghost in the Shell (Playstation, 1997). He also designed
the cover art for
Winds of Thunder (PC Engine, 1991).
About Eternal City, Masamune Shirow mentioned in Intron Depot 1
(one of his popular art book) that he designed six villains in
the game, the main mecha, his female pilot and the game cover screen, without really
knowing what the game was about...

I am sure you reacted the same way I did the first time I
saw Eternal City's cover art - woooow, a game designed
by Masamune Shirow and developed by Naxat Soft!
This game must be the bomb, right?... wrong! The graphics
are barely above average but it is in the
gameplay department that the game itself fails. Levels
are monotonous, enemies appear at random and the controls are
execrable. You later collect the back booster that
makes the whole experience more bearable, but not by much.
The weapon bar is also really annoying and some weapons don't
even automatically recharge later in the game. I kind
of see what Naxat Soft tried to do here, an interesting
mix of action and exploration (borrowed from other classics such
as Metroid) -
but the levels are anything but bland, unnecessary huge, and you spend most of the
time getting lost and backtracking. Eternal City is
not a complete disaster, but it has many issues that will
turn off most gamers...
