Rayxanber 3 is the last episode of the Rayxanber series
released by Data West for the FM-Towns and the PC Engine's Super CDRom²
system. The evil Zoul empire is invading again and one of the Earth's mother ship is
under attack and must be evacuated. The player's first mission is to
protect it from incoming waves of alien creatures and weird looking ships.
Soon, all hopes are lost and the mother ship is condemned to destruction.
The player doesn't have much choice and must enter and fly deep inside
the Alien's world and eventually reach its core.
This opus uses the same controls and game mechanics as before: one button fires the main
weapon and the other quickly thrusts the ship in one direction.
However, missiles can now be charged up, in a way similar to R*Type,
and when the bar at the bottom of the screen turns yellow, two
powerful missiles can be launched. If fire is pressed again, they will
split into a raging cloud of homing missiles. Power-ups are also spreaded around
each area - as a side note, those secondary weapon icons constantly rotate and
will fire in the direction they are facing when collected. This
adds a great deal of strategy to the game and picking the wrong
direction can dramatically reduce the player's chances of survival...

Unlike Rayxanber 2, which was a real desappointment (mainly because of its
crazy difficulty level), Rayxanber 3 is a great and spectacular shooter.
It is sadly a bit too easy, only few parts of the game are really
hard until you figure out how to get through them. But I am not
complaining, the first two episodes happened to be much too hard
to my taste and way beyond what a standard human brain can achieve -
or at least mine. Graphics are
incredibly detailed and are probably some of the best I have seen
for the PC Engine system. My only complaint would for got the poor sound effects, they
end up being very irritating, especially the high-pitched putt-putt
some of the special weapons make. All in all, this title
is all good and shouldn't be missed. And if, after a while, you still can't bear the
sound effects, don't forget that nothing prevents you to lower the sound and listen to
your favourite heavy metal CD while playing !
