Psychic Storm is a vertical shooter up by Alpha system
and published by Laser Soft/Telenet. Earth is under attack by a vicious
race of insectoid-like aliens and the action begins in New Hong Kong City
where most of the alien invasion seems to concentrate. Humanity's last hope lies
with four courageous pilots and their space-fighters - Alex and his
vulcan-gun laser, Charr and his Psyco Shell, Joe and his
short-ranged but powerful Hell Flame and finally Nastasia and her
Ion laser beams. Each ship can fire secondary weapons and also transform
into a bio-mechanoid-beast ship with frightening powers. Alex's ship, for
instance, can turn into a giant butterfly and shoot waves of fire from its large
wings. Obviously, these forms only last for a short period of time but more energy
can be collected along the way to extend their temporal power. Flashing enemies
drop power-ups when destroyed which can either upgrade the primary weapon
(blue orbs) or bring some life back (dual orbs). Pressing the
two action buttons together also unleash a powerful bomb blast - they however
take time to recharge and need to be used wisely. Finally, a two simultaneous
player mode is available where players can combine their ships into a much
stronger and powerful mutated form.

Alpha system is today better known for their excellent Shikigami no Shiro
(aka Castle Shikigami) shooter series.

Honestly, the first time I played Psychic Storm, I didn't really
know what to expect. Not many players praise this game but it ended up being
a very enjoyable experience. Graphics are not the best I have seen for the
PC Engine system but they are more than correct and everything runs
smooth. The gameplay mechanics are by-the-book but they work really well, same
for the controls which are excellent and always responsive. I would only have
two complaints about the game - first of all, the soundtrack doesn't fit the
action well and it is a real shame. Then the game is overall too easy...
but I'm a shooter freak so maybe
this comment doesn't really apply here. All in all, Psychic Storm is a
nice shooter and provides its fair share of fun. The game is full of surprises
and sadly too often overlooked.
