Platform / Action game

Ushio to Tora is a side-scrolling platform game by Yukata and based on a popular Japanese manga and anime series. It tells the story of Aotsuki Ushio, the son of a temple priest who lives in the family's shrine. One day, he literally stumbles on a mystical cave and accidentally free Tora, a hideous tiger-like demon his ancestors captured and sealed inside the den five hundred years earlier. The demon was trapped with the mystical Beast Spear and Ushio released him as he tried to take the enchanted weapon. Unsurprisingly, Tora immediately wants to eat the young boy, but the monster soon realizes that his presence in the human world also summons all kind of other demons. Ushio and Tora both quickly decide to join forces in order to defeat them. The game sees our heroes travel across Japan, from Tokyo to the island of Hokkaido, and battle all sort of vile demons and creatures along the way. The player is free to choose which character to control. Ushio can use the Beast Spear to slash demons and other mystical creatures - he can also unleash a powerful blue wave of energy. Tora, however, only uses his claws and sharp teeth and can unleash bolts of lightning. Special items are scattered around each stage - food items give our heroes some life back (rice balls for Ushio and hamburgers for Tora), and magic gems extend their maximum life (blue gems for Ushio and red gems for Tora).

Ushio to Tora is a bit disappointing. The game seems to follow the anime fairly closely, and the demons you encounter during your journey are usually rather impressive and really unusual (my favorite is the green demon riding the airliner you're on). But controls are not really responsive - Ushio is probably the best character to choose from (Tora has short and useless claws), but either way, you often won't be able to hit your enemies without getting hit yourself. Additionally, most of the stages are actual boss battles which doesn't really make the game any easier. I feel that better controls and a more balanced difficulty level would have made of Ushio to Tora an excellent action game...
