Super Tekkyu Fight is a cute puzzle-action game published by
Banpresto and featuring the company's traditional super deformed
characters, namely Kamen Rider Black RX, Ultraman, RX-78 Gundam
and Banpresto's proprietary hero - Fighter Roa. Our four super-heroes
are trapped inside eight maze-like worlds surrounded by all kind of enemies and
dangerous hazards. Each world is made of small arenas and, like most games in the
genre, every single enemy needs to be crushed to dust in order to unlock the next area. Each
world also wraps up with an obligatory boss encounter. However, and unlike other games
in the genre, players get to use spiky chain balls to smash their opponents. The weapon
starts as a small chain with a limited range but blocks scattered around each floor
often hide power-ups which upgrade it in many different ways - like extend its range by
one square or turn it into a gold chain that can destroy a whole line of blocks
in a single blow. More goodies can be found much the same way - speed boots, extra
life and so forth. Special blocks on the play field can also activate series of deadly
traps when hit, such as the ones stunning anyone caught in their wake, or others
firing blasts of fire or long tentaclous vines. Interestingly, our four heroes
also have a life bar and can jump. The latter is at the core of the gameplay
- players can jump on blocks and literally bounce off to the nearest tile or block, and
unlock some otherwise unreachable areas of the field, or, in the worst case, just fall in a nearby
hole and lose a precious life. Moreover, landing on an opponent's head also stun him
for a short period of time. Super Tekkyu Fight also features an intense
four players battle mode and a password system to save the game's progress at
the end of each world.

The game that comes to my mind immediately after playing Super Tekkyu Fight
for the first time
is obviously Hudson Soft's Bomberman. Same basic ideas here -
which is, if you think about it, not a bad thing. The single player mode is fun
and the game features enough enemies and traps to keep you entertained for a
while. The battle mode is, as expected, crazy fun and the life bars and jumping action
add a lot of fun to the mix. Sadly, the game's biggest problem lies in its
controls - they are tricky to use and jumping can be really confusing at
times. Same when throwing the long chain balls, they're often not as responsive
as you would like them to be. Super Tekkyu Fight can't be accused of failing
to introduce its own ideas, but the overall game falls short of its potential.
Nevertheless, it is a fun game and a good alternative to
Hudson Soft's excellent Bomberman.
