Here is a game from Compile's popular Puyo Puyo series. But here,
rules have slightly changed, hence the name Nazo Puyo instead of Puyo Puyo
(Nazo means 'enigma' or 'riddle' in Japanese).
First of all, puzzles are still present in this version, but the player has
to visit small towns and challenge its inhabitants in Puyo battles.
When a group of characters is finally defeated, it is time to
play against the master Puyo who keeps the entrance to the next level.
An interesting twist has also been added to the original
Puyo Puyo's rules - each stage asks the player to fulfill a certain task,
like clean up all beans only using a limited amount of puyos, or only puyos
of a specific color. This can be tricky and challenging for non-Japanese
speaking players though, these conditions being mentioned at the beginning of
each puzzle in Japanese. And some of the later tasks can be hard
to figure out, such as chain-reactions or groups or puyos that need
to be erased at the same time. The game can be played in Story mode
(where the player can either play as Rulue or Arle and travel
the world looking for the ultimate curry recipie) or in Puzzle mode
giving the player a countless amount of puzzles to solve. Finally, a
Nazo Puyo Editor is also available and allows players to create
their own mind boggling puzzles.

Nazo Puyo is an interesting variation of Puyo Puyo's series of games
and several titles were released. The first two were available for Sega's Game Gear, namely
Nazo Puyo (1993) and Nazo Puyo 2 (1993). Then Nintendo's Super Famicom
saw two titles : Super Nazo Puyo: Rurū no Rū (1995) and Super Nazo Puyo Tsū:
Rurū no Tetsuwan Hanjyouki (1996).

I must warn you, Super Nazo Puyo is very confusing at first, especially if you
do not read Japanese well. But once you get the hang of it, I feel that the game becomes
much more challenging and interesting than any other Puyo Puyo title (especially in single play).
It definitively forces the player to use more brain power than ever before, and is
more oriented towards puzzle solving than Puyo stacking. Super Nazo Puyo won't be
every player's cup of tea, but it certainly is a great variation of
the Puyo Puyo genre.
