As per Nintendo tradition, an episode of the Mario series was a
launch title for a Nintendo game system (the Super Famicom in this case)
and became an immense commercial success. Super Mario World was also titled
Super Mario Bros 4 in Japan, and it is indeed the fourth episode of Nintendo's
popular franchise. Once again, the cute Princess Peach (aka Princess Toadstool)
has been kidnaped by the evil King Koopa (aka Bowser). It is up to our
heroic plumber to save the damsel in distress. This time around he gets helped out by
a set of unlikely companions - the friendly and faithful Yoshi dinosaurs.
They come in four different flavors (green, yellow, red and blue), each with their
own set of abilities. Mario can ride his new friends and satisfy their
insatiable appetite for adventure. They also have a voracious appetite for fruits
and Koopas, and they can swallow any enemy on their path without effort, and
spit out deadly fireballs or empty shells. Mario starts out his journey as a
tiny plumber but power-ups scattered around each level give him the ability to grow
into Super Mario and to learn new moves - the Fire Flower gives him
the ability to throw fireballs and the Magic Feather the ability to fly.
Power-ups can also be stored and used later in the game. Levels can be revisited at
will after they've been unlocked and giant colored switches hidden inside Switch Palaces
open new routes and allow Mario to access special zones and secret worlds.

Super Mario World is probably one of the best Mario game in my book.
First of all, the game truly takes advantage of the Super Famicom's advanced
features of the time with gorgeous parallax scrolling, amazing backgrounds and insane
scaling effects. Controls are incredibly smooth and Mario responds to your
commands with a gloating satisfaction - it is when you get your hands on the game's
controller that it becomes clear how special Super mario World really is.
But for me, the gameplay is where the game shines the most - the level design is
incredible and there is always something new to discover, the variety of enemies
and hazards on show is simply staggering. The game's soundtrack is also wonderful and
catchy, and it will stick to your brain for years to come . For Nintendo this
game was certainly business as usual, but for us, Super Mario World is
without a doubt a masterpiece of the genre. An unmissable gem and a timeless classic.
