Shien The Blade Chaser is a first person shooter developed by
Vic Tokai and published by Dynamic. Shien and his beloved
Aska are the greatest ninjas the world has ever known. Bangol, a
demon from the future, has been looking for the most noble warriors who have ever
lived to lead his army, and he kidnaps Aska in an attempt to control
Shien and his unmatched fighting skills. Shien must now travel
through time, from 16th Century Japan to 21st Century South America,
and finally fight Bangol in his heavily guarded castle. Shien The Blade Chaser
is played in a first person view, in a way similar to shooters such as Operation Wolf
or Crossed Sword. Most of the stages offer side-scrolling action with enemies
appearing in the distance or attacking Shien in close combat. However, some boss
encounters are more complex and the whole game turns into a pseudo-3D mode, in a way
somewhat similar to Space Harrier. Shien can throw shurikens
to take out his enemies, or use his knife in close combat. The latter attack is also
especially useful to block incoming shots or, like for instance in the second level,
to kill angry fish who tend to fiercely bite Shien and don't let go.
Shien The Blade Chaser also supports the Super Famicom mouse, and the
device certainly makes the whole experience a bit less challenging, especially in later stages.

Teaser text from the American version:
Enjoy a breathtaking weeend on us, in 500 B.C. Greece.
Shien's Revenge takes you warping through time to
places like 21st Century South American and 13th century
Mongolia. Sounds like on heck of a vacation doesn't it ?
And the only thing that might put a damper on your
travel plans is Saw Tooth, master of evil ninja techniques,
because he tends to destroy everything in sight. Oh and
there are the Hanging Snakes that live in treetops and
drop down when they're hungry. And did we forget to
mention the Undertaker, whose expertice lies underground.

Shien The Blade Chaser is an interesting and very unusual game, and it
shows great qualities - large and detailed sprites, smooth controls and really nice
level structure. What I like most is the way how the knife attack is activated : you
have to give a quick side motion with the controller, like if swinging a real knife.
Taking of which, although you can play the game with a standard controller, I advice
you to use a Nintendo mouse instead, as it makes the game a lot easier
(and interesting) to play. Then Shien: The Blade Chaser may look largely
out-dated compared to today's first person shooters, and the zillion of polygons
they can easily throw on screen. And yet, I personally had a lot of fun playing this
title and I recommend it. The different themes of the levels are also really unusual
and bizarre, such as one of the later stages that gets Shien to fight Nazi
germans in France during World War II. All in all, Shien is a fun,
fast paced and solid first person shooter.
