RPM Racing is an overview racing game by Silicon & Synapse and published
in Japan by Victor Interactive Software. The goal of the game is rather
straightforward - the player must race a vehicle around various tracks and win
cash. Three cars are available for the start - a large truck, a sport and a racing
car. But nobody is judged by their appearance and in a way similar to
Monster Trucks, they are technically just shells over powerful engines and
four large all-terrain tires. Each level is divided into tracks, from two to eight
later in the game. Each race also features an entry fee, and the higher their cost,
the greater is the payback if the player happens to finish in the front of the pack.
During the race, it is important to keep an eye on the car's health bar though, which
decreases with every hit. Two weapons are available during the game, mines
can be dropped out on the track and destroy any vehicle silly enough to drive over
them and Oil can be used to throw vehicles into the side of the road. There
is one caveat though, mines and oil affect any car on the track,
including the player's vehicle. Money can also be used in shops to purchase new
parts or upgrade the vehicle's tires, engine, armor or shock absorber. Items are
also up for sell, such as gallons of oil, nitrous oxide (for quick speed boosts) or
land mines. The game also includes a track editor where players can create their own
course, and a two simultaneous player mode.

Interestingly, RPM Racing shares a lot in common with Racing Destruction Set
released for the Commodore 64 in 1985, or Motocross released for the
Intellivision in 1983. They were both developed by Rick Koening but
it is not clear if he was involved in any way in the development of RPM Racing (it
is unlikely though, Racing Destruction Set was originally published by
Electronic Arts and RPM Racing was the first in-house game
developed by Silicon & Synapse, now better known as Blizzard Entertainment).
Also, RPM Racing is often regarded as a prequel to Rock'N Roll Racing
released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo and distributed in Japan by
Namco in 1994.

RPM Racing is incredibly average and the gameplay is slow and,
let's face it, boring. I also wonder why the game's designers included
three cars to choose from, only their appearance technically changes,
they all three behave in exactly the same way. Not much is also going on
and you will soon won't even bother racing new tracks. And also, why does
the game have a split screen even during single plays ? Finally, handling
is tough, mainly because of the size of the vehicles - they are way too
large for the narrow tracks they're driving on. Rock'N Roll Racing
released a year later is much better and sort of enhanced all the brighter
sides of the original game. All in all, a poor and bland game...
