Psycho Dream is an unusual side-scroller game by Telenet Japan and published by
Riot. Two courageous demon hunters go on a perilous journey to free
the world of the living and also bring back the young girl Saya Kaori
imprisoned deep within the demon world. Ryo Shizima is a red dressed
swordman who can upgrade his sword into powerful rotating blades and
Maria Tobari uses an electric whip and can upgrade it into deadly
metal claws. Both heroes can also trigger powerful demon attacks and wipe
out most of the enemies on screen. Various monsters drop crystals when
defeated which help our heroes on their journey : short-range weapon
upgrade (Yellow), long-range weapon (Blue), force-field (Green), Life (Pink),
Bomb (Purple). The most powerful crystals are probably the red ones, turning
the main characters into powerful deadly hunters. In this new form, Ryo receives
a thick metallic armor firing bouncing laser beams and Maria grows wings
and fires homing balls of energy in every direction. Despite the choice of
two playable characters, the game is single-player only.

Interestingly, Psycho Dream was planned for release in 1993
in the United States as "Dream Probe". But it never
made it to the shelves and a prototype certainly exists.

Psycho Dream is definitively an unusual game, the overall design of the
various demons and locations give this game an added depth, with amazing visuals
and stunning transparency effects. I personally find Mary's outfit a bit
odd though - she's wearing leather, high heel shoes and use a whip as a weapon.
What is a Dominatrix Mistress doing in a video game featuring demons ?
Psycho Dream is not bad, controls are a bit sluggish (they feel better
as you get used to them) and the game can be sometimes hard and frustrating,
especially when your character gets surrounded and can not escape a tricky
situation. It is also possible to accumulate tons of Demon Attacks, making
you breeze through some of the boss encounters, which is a shame...
All in all, Psycho Dream is an
interesting game, nothing amazing really, but a title you will surprise yourself
going back to from time to time.
