Battle Zeque Den is a side scrolling beat'em up by Asmik.
The Earth is at stake, the spirits of light and darkness that
hold the world together have collapsed and separated, and three female
fighters embark on a long journey to prevent the imminent apocalypse.
Each girl comes with her own sets of skills and
is associated with a different elemental spirit -
the red haired Rufu is averagely skilled and can use fire magic,
Kairu is fast and can use water magic and Hamusu,
with her pink gloves, displays incredible boxing skills and can use Earth magic.
They all utilize a nice array of fighting techniques from punches, slide-kicks, jumps
to the ability to grab and throw their enemies when in close-combat or in mid-air.
They can also all unleash medium special attacks that will hit
nearby enemies in exchange of some health. But the most effective and
powerful attacks are triggered when the girls summon their magic elements.
These attacks come in very limited quantities but can dramatically damage enemies and
especially bosses. Finally, the game has a very interesting and
unique feature - each girl can level up as the game progresses, gaining
extra health and attack power along the way. Battle Zeque Den
consists of six levels each divided into several sub-stages and is
single player only.

Battle Zeque Den was only released in Japan and is a little
known beat'm up in the west. The game looks really good,
the graphics are sharp and detailed, and the sprites are
fairly large on screen. Controls are also responsive and work
really well, although the moves are very limited.
The game is also more than just
another beat'm up - stages are incredibly varied and have
different terrain levels and platforms, allowing the player
to use different strategies in order to defeat his enemies.
The levelling up system is also really unusual for the genre
and gives the game a nice RPG-like feeling, although it comes at a
price and you can't switch characters during the game.
The game has one flaw though - it sadly becomes repetitive
and monotonous after a while. You can only fight two enemies
at the time and some areas, especially half-way though the game,
have waves and waves of the same foes at nauseam.
Magic attacks are also a little unbalanced and Rufu,
for instance, can defeat most of the early bosses with her fire attack
without even breaking a sweat.
All in all, Battle Zeque Den is a decent and fun beat'em up
and brings some interesting new twists to the genre.
I personally recommend it!
