Action / Beat'em up game
|
Wonder Momo is a side-scrolling beat'm up by Namco.
The players takes control of Momo, a cute girl who
has the extraordinary ability to turn into a wonder-girl
(hence the game's title). Interestingly, all the action happen
in a Theatre and an audience can be clearly seen at the bottom of the screen.
Each stage has its load of enemies, such as easy to hit
grey creatures or meaner flying machines. They sometimes
drop colored pills which will refill Momo's precious
life bar. It is quite important to collect every single one of them, hence Momo's
life is not restored when a stage is completed. Everytime
a baddy is defeated, Momo's wonder bar increases.
When ready, she can turn into Wonder Momo by either facing
the audience and repeadly hitting the fire button, or by entering
a small twister that never seems to appear when you need it the most.
Wonder Momo's greatest ability is a ring of energy that
she can throw at will at her enemies, if she can managed to pick it up
once it's gone bouncing all over the stage though. Then, soon, the boss appears and
has to be defeated to unlock the next stage. Every five levels or so,
an short animated screen shows Momo having some good time.

Wonder Momo was originally an arcade game released by Namco in 1987.
Momo was also featured in other Namco Games, such as Baten Kaitos
(GameCube, 2003) or Namco X Capcom (Playstation2).

Wonder Momo is such a weird game. Graphics are correct but
yet really average. Then the game itself gets rapidly boring
and repetitive. It quickly feels like you've been killing the same
creatures again and again for the last hour (if you lasted that long though).
Levels, because of the 'staging' thing, are incredibly small and
there's nothing there to get the player really motivated. The cute
animated screens are maybe the only rewards that I can think of.
All in all, a poor and repetitive game.
