Violent Soldier is a horizontal shooter by IGS (Information Global Services).
An advanced civilization has been sending attack probes towards our planet, and the premise
of alien invasion forces Earth scientists to assemble a fleet of space-fighters to counter
the threat. The violent soldiers are sent into enemy territory to destroy the alien
stronghold. Each fighter comes with an unique feature - an armored cone is installed at the
front of the ship and protects it from enemy fire. However, the cone is fully adjustable and
collecting power-ups gives the player the ability to open this special nose-feature, allowing
for a wider spread of attack (from 3 to 5 ways), but offers a weaker protection. Three
different weapons are available throughout the game - laser-beams (blue),
Vulcan spread-laser (red) and homing missiles (green). Special pods can
also be collected and used to protect the areas directly above and below the ship.
Finally, a powerful ring blast can be charged up by holding the fire button to protect
the ship from enemy shots, or damage alien ships foolish enough to venture within its
effective range. Violent Soldier consists of six levels.

Violent Soldier is a good, but very difficult shooter. Graphics
are overall correct but uneven, and some stages tend to look better than
others. The game gets quite unfair around the third stage, and becomes
increasingly frustrating and painful near the end. I do not want to spoil
it too much, but the last boss is just pure shooter hell, with tiny
red-shrimp like enemies flying all over the screen. And each time you
lose a ship, you're sent back to the nearest check point with your main
weapon back to its unbelievably weak default power level. The nose feature
is quite interesting though, and gives the game an unique twist and a nice
risk/reward trade-off, although I feel it is under-exploited. All in all,
Violent Soldier is fun and more than correct, but I'll only recommend
it to shooter fans looking for a tough and gruelling challenge.
