Kaizō Chōnin Shubibinman 2 is the sequel to the more than
average first title released in 1989 for the PC Engine system. The
strong Tasuke and the cute Kyapiko
(aka Arnold and Sonya in the American version)
are back in this intense
side scrolling action game. This time around, our heroes have swapped their power-swords
for more conventional laser guns. The guns can also be charged up (by holding the fire
button) to unleash powerful blasts of energy. Another interesting
feature of the game is the alternance of platform and shooting stages.
For instance, right after the first level and the crazy chase jumping from
building tops to building tops, our heroes embark on a pocket-submarine
and get their way through a treacherous underwater cave. A two simultaneous player
mode is available and, interestingly, both players share the same life bar.

Teaser text from the American version:
It's been two years since they defeated the evil army. As
Shockman cyborgs, Arnold and Sonya have returned
peace to the city. Then one day, the scientist who
transformed them sends them a message: "Come to my
lab and I will return you to your human bodies." Elated,
the two cyborgs hurry to the scientist's laboratory. But
along the way they encounter a mysterious shape
changing enemy. They defeat the enemy and head for
the scientist's laboratory, but they are already too late.
The scientist has been captured by the evil RYO Empire!
You must save the scientist! Get ready for the battle of
your life !

Kaizō Chōnin Shubibinman 2 is a vast improvement
over the original game. Controls are responsive and sharp
unlike the terrible 'skating' characters found in the first
episode. The game is literally huge with tons of vast and
challenging stages. The difficulty is also on the hard side
with the 'die and start all over again' feature so
prevalent in early games. Even if our hero happens to be killed
during a boss encounter,
he gets to start the whole stage all over again. Very frustrating.
If you've got strong nerves you may see the end of this one. All in all,
Kaizō Chōnin Shubibinman 2 is an excellent action
game with great visuals and enjoyable gameplay.
