Power Gate is a horizontal shooter by Make Software and published by
Pack in Video.
The player takes control of a high-tech fighter plane and flies through canyons,
enemy cities and battles all kind of enemies and giant battle cruisers. The fighter plane starts with a simple
and slow vulcan gun that can be upgraded during the game by destroying flashing
enemies, often in the shape of planes or missiles. Other power-ups are also
available, such as ground bombs or energy-cells restoring one of the plane's
shield bar. However, the fighting plane can also carry a secondary weapon.
There are six of them including Homing missiles, Napalm Bombs, 8-ways
and even one which is fairly unique and mirrors the plane and triples
its fire-power! Secondary weapons are triggered using the other
action button and can be stocked up.

Surprisingly, Make Sorfware and Pack-in-Video released a sequel to
Power Gate! The game is called Hawk F-123
and was exclusively released for the Super CDRom system in 1992. Although Hawk F-123
is much better than the HuCard version tested here, it is still a really average game...

Pack-in-Video is infamously known for publishing below average titles for the PC Engine
system and here they are again, blasting out another shooter called Power Gate.
Hum.... well... What can I really say about this poor title?
Let's say that Pack-in-Video delivered again.
They have constantly failed at publishing acceptable
shooters and I'm sorry to say that even games like the atrocious Deep Blue look better than
Power Gate... On a positive note,
Power Gate features a much better level design
and is relatively more "fun" to play than Deep Blue.
But the graphics here are incredibly flat and
the thick and hard black line surrounding every single sprite is pure
ugliness. Musics and sounds effects are also on the scary side and the
same soundtrack seems to be reused in every single stage. Finally,
the gameplay is just appalling and your fighter can only fire slow and annoying
putt-putt bullets at an incredibly slow pace. Secondary weapons do help,
but not by much... Even if you give this game a chance, the last three
stages will crush you with uninspired corridors repeated at nauseam
and cheap end-of-level bosses... frankly, these encounters don't even
qualify as 'boss fights' in my book.
It is a shame because Power Gate is technically fine, but, all in all,
it ends up being one of the ugliest
HuCard shooter for sure.
