Neutopia is an action/adventure game by Hudson Soft.
The land of Neutopia was at peace until the day the
evil demon Dirth arrived, kidnapped princess Aurora and
stole the eight medallions of power. Each medallion represents the
spirit of Neutopia's leaders and princess Aurora
is the only one who can unleash the forces of goodness
that will stop the advance of evil. The player takes control
of Jazeta and his mission is to find the princess and
to retrieve the precious medallions hidden deep inside eight
dungeons scattered around the four over-worlds.
Our hero freely wonders around the game world armed with
a sword and a shield. He must complete various objectives,
collect money, retrieve new items and find more sophisticated
weaponry. Jazeta can use a large variety of weapons and
items such as the bomb allowing him to find secret doorways or
the almighty flame rod. Some people around the over-world hold
valuable items and information and Jazeta has to
intensively explore these places to hunt for the
precise locations of the dungeons.
A password system or the Ram Backup system allow the player to save
his progress.

It is difficult not to think about Zelda when
playing this game. Both games share a lot in
common, indeed.
Neutopia is (of course) technically
better but it's story is not as complex and
sophisticated as Zelda.
But don't read me wrong, Neutopia is not just
a cheap imitation of
Nintendo's masterpiece. It is
faithful to Zelda and Hudson Soft
managed to bring its own unique touches to the game.
A great example to that is the brilliant
soundtrack which definitively catches you by surprise
the first time you play the game. All in all,
from all the Zelda copy cats, Neutopia is
probably the best of its kind (except maybe for its
excellent sequel Neutopia 2). A great and
addictive title.

What? no five stars for this game??? It is a true delight,
slightly less thorough than Zelda III but
it is at least less intricate and a lot easier! The
soundtrack is superb and graphics are excellent,
Neutopia is a great souvenir for me,
reminds me that I should get started on playing
its sequel! ^^
