Monster Pro Wrestling is an unusual wrestling game by Tonkin House.
Ever wondered how good muscled mutant monsters would do in a wrestling ring?
Monster Pro Wrestling can certainly give you some answers. As the title implies,
Monster Pro Wrestling is about professional wrestling and monsters.
In 1999, humanity lives in underground cities and the evil Belzebuth sends
his demon wrestlers to affront humans. Doctor Yamato takes on the challenge
and creates mutant wrestlers to win the tournament (this is, however, what can be understood
from the game's manual). The player first selects a champion from a list
including wrestlers such as Fly Man, Zombie Man or Poison Man.
Then, it is time to meet the mad scientist who can train and assist the fighter,
and in the mutant laboratory, the wrestler can be tuned up using power points.
Thirty points are available at the start and can be distributed across various attributes
such as health or strength. It is now time to get our mutant straight to
the ring and call another mutant wrestler to challenge him. However,
Monster Pro Wrestling has an unusual way to display and manage each match.
A number randomly loops on screen and the player must hold the attack button and
pick a number. This becomes our mutant's Attack Power for the current round.
The wrestler can then attack only if the opponent picks a lower Attack Power.
Either ways, the stage that follows is pure frantic finger bashing action
which either affects the strength of the coming attack, or the resulting escape move.
Fairly large (and often funny) animated sequences show the outcome of the round and the game moves
forward until one of the wrestler wins the match. If victorious, the mutant gains an
upgrade and then gets ready for another ferocious match.

Monster Pro Wrestling is such a weird and unusual title.
The kind of game 'Japanese import hunters' (like me) love,
showing a side of gaming rarely or never seen before.
So here you have it, weird mutant wrestlers fighting against each other
in a ring. Graphics are impressive and full of hilarious bits. Only watching
the face of your mutant right before he receives his first attack
is often priceless. However, the gameplay is far from exciting.
It sometimes feels more like a rock-paper-scissors game where luck
is more important than strategy. Your mutant's attributes definitely weight
the balance but don't really prevent the game to become a frustrating experience
at times. Monster Pro Wrestling is an unusual and fun game that sadly
falls short of his ambitions. But it is easy to find for really cheap,
so why not give it a try?
