Action / Platform game

Momotarō is back in this side scrolling platform game by Hudson Soft. Peach Boy, as he is known in the west, is once again on a fantastic journey filled with quirky characters and armies of fierce demons. But, this time around, Hudson Soft decided to evolve their own series and turned it into a platform game. Interestingly, the player has first to fulfill a tutorial mission - the short challenge consists of a quick race over strange looking creatures reminding of pink poo-poos. This first task influences the beginning of the game and decides, for instance, of how much money the player should start his journey with. The adventure finally starts and Momotarō can run, jump, and use his magic Katana to strike down the countless demon foes who come to assail him. Balls of pink energy can be fired from the mighty blade and hit enemies from afar. Small villages are also scattered throughout the game world and can be visited to purchase new swords, armors and various healing items. Some shops even allow the player to save his progress. Finally, old hermits hidden inside large huts will challenge our hero with various short matches - such as quiz, rock-paper-scissors - and award him magic spells.

Momotarō Katsugeki is a charming addition to Hudson's classic franchise. Unlike the other games of the series, any non-Japanese speaking player should have plenty of fun right off the bat. Behind an endearing façade hides a fun and enjoyable platform game with a wonderful and responsive action. Momotarou Katsugeki features good level design and some unexpected twists such as an under water stage with shooting-oriented action. I only wish that there was a little more variation in terms of boss battles as you only end up fighting the same demon with different attack strategies. All in all, Momotarō Katsugeki is a solid game and will certainly appeal to fans of the genre.
