Knight Rider Special is a racing/action game by Pack-in-Video and based
on the popular American television series 'Knight Rider'. Dr Schrodinger's
daughter has been kidnapped and Michael Knight, on-board his super-car Kitt,
embarks on a mission to rescue her. The sport car comes equipped with a machine gun and
more upgrades can be collected as the game progresses, such as the ability to drive the
car on its side wheels or to fire piercing lasers. Kitt also has the incredible
ability to super-boost when it hits two hundred miles per hour, and this technique can
be used to go airborne and jump over obstacles at high speed. Knight Rider Special
consists of six levels and is single player only.

Knight Rider was a highly popular American television series originally
aired from 1982 to 1986. It told the story of lieutenant Michael Long
(David Hasselhoff) who becomes Michael Knight after surviving a
near fatal gun shot wound to the head. Thanks to a mysterious benefactor
called Devon Miles, he becomes a mighty crime fighter and is helped
by a modified Pontiac Trans-Am super car fitted with highly advanced
artificial intelligence called Kitt.

Pack-in-Video also released a version of Knight Rider for the
Famicom in 1988. Both games offer a similar gameplay but they are overall
very different - the Famicom version features a first-person view from
inside the car and no real boss fights.

This is rather strange, but the widely available game ROM is
actually hacked and the game is in debug/cheat mode by default.
The time limit doesn't count down and Kitt doesn't seem
to take any damage, which is not the case with the real HuCard.

Knight Rider Special heavily borrows ideas and mechanics
from Taito's popular Chase HQ which is, in itself,
not necessarily a bad thing. Levels are rather fun and offer a nice
(yet limited) variety of enemies for the player to fight against - cars, trucks
but also armored vehicles and even fighter jets! Bosses are also
varied but they are often incredibly challenging and take skill
and practice to defeat. However, I think the game suffers from
frustratingly imprecise controls (especially when Kitt goes airborne)
and the animation is incredibly jerky at times. As a side note,
I wonder what the "Special" stands for... Pack-In-Video
did release a Famicom version a year earlier called 'Knight Rider',
and maybe this PC Engine game was supposed to be an
'enhanced' version or a sequel... But, all in all, fans of Knight Rider and
David Hasselhoff should stop hyperventilating now - although
this game is one of the "best" Knight Rider game out there,
it is a below average effort and I don't really recommend it.
