Final Lap Twin is a racing game by Namco and conversion
of the arcade game Final Lap originally released in 1987.
Actually, the game is more of a spin-off than a true conversion, read on.
Like in the original arcade game, the player can race against
the computer (or against another friend) at the wheel of a
blazing fast Formula car. The game offers
two main play types - Formula 3000
or Formula One - that can be played in single or
two-player mode. Interestingly, the screen is horizontal split
and this either in single-player or two-player mode
(hence the use of "Twin" in
the game title). Additionally, the player can practice on
any of the game's twenty tracks before jumping into the real races.
But Final Lap Twin has one more trick up its sleeves, and
the game offers a rather unique Role Playing mode.
The 'Quest' stars a young boy who aspires to become
the Baby Four-Wheel-Drive champion. His father has
taught him everything he knows about 4WD cars
and the boy is confident that
he will win the tournament and make him feel proud!
The goal of this mode is to travel the country through an
overhead view, talk to town people, gather clues
and to challenge other drivers in one-on-one races. Each defeated
opponent awards the player with money, which can then be used
to upgrade the car in various ways (this includes Body,
Battery, Tire, Engine and Spoiler).

Teaser text from the American version:
It's winner take all! Read your tachometer. Get in the right gear. Check your opponent's
position. Let the hammer down on the straightaway. Hairpin coming! Grab the inside lane!
Drive a V8, V10 or V12 grand prix race car. Select equipment and match it to the course.
Race against the clock or a friend. When you think you're good enough, take on the Baby
Four-Wheel-Drive Warriors in the Quest Mode. Just when you thought it was safe, BAM!

I was initially a bit skeptical about Final Lap Twin.
I admit I'm not really into racing or sport games, and I feel that
most racers from that era didn't stand the test of time
all that well. And, I must say, the racing part of
Final Lap Twin is really average - nothing bad,
really, the cars handle quite well and the gameplay is
fairly forgiving, but there's no much more
to it than that. Or is it?
This is where the Quest mode comes in.
This aspect of the game is really innovative and
overall really fun to play! Although this mode is
relatively short, it features a non-linear
progression which is rather pleasant.
All in all, Final Lap Twin is not a
masterpiece by any means, but the RPG mode
definitively breathes life into an
otherwise average racer, and that even to this day!
