Drop Rock is a puzzle/breakout game by Data East.
An evil spirit has possessed the cute Izumi and she has
now fallen into a deep sleep.
Her boyfriend Takashi wants to help the poor girl,
but he is powerless against the malevolent curse. One night,
a muse appears in his dream and tells him how to infiltrate
Izumi's nightmares. But traveling this
dreamworld comes with a twist and he can only do
it in the form of a magic orb. Drop Rock is at heart a
traditional breakout type of game that features a
paddle (the orb), a ball and groups of blocks to destroy (they are here in the shape
of fruits and other objects such as gems or skulls).
But the actual gameplay in Drop Rock has
a few twists thrown in.
The screen scrolls vertically and the goal of the game is
to reach the end of each level rather than clearing
every single block on the screen. The orb can also
freely move around the screen, however touching a block
is lethal.
Additionally, blocks obey the laws of gravity
and drop down when
they are not in contact with any surrounding blocks, and
the player can perform special combos by removing
large groups at once.
The orb also comes with a special ability - the player can
switch from a up-and-down to a side-to-side bounce
at any time during gameplay, giving him more control
over the course of the game.
Beside, a barrier located at the
bottom of the playfield prevents the ball to fall off. But,
as the game progresses,
this barrier slowly crumbles with every hit - thankfully, the
Road Roller can fix it and appears if Takashi successfully
hits the ball fifteen times in a row.
Finally the player can use a special power that
reverses the scrolling direction for a short amount of
time, giving him more breathing space - of course this option
comes in limited quantities and is only
meant for desperate situations.
Drop Rock features all sort of special blocks
that release all kind of power-ups, such as reverse arrow,
solid barrier , invulnerability, extra-life or the handy
penetrating ball.
Drop Rock consists of five rounds made out of
several sub-stages each (for a total of sixteen levels) and
is single player only.

Teaser text from the American version:
There's no waking up from this nightmare! You'll need all your
nerve and strategy to get out alive! A dream of giant apples and
diamonds goes berserk when they turn into deadly demons raining
down on your head! You have to shoot'em down with a steel ball.
Ricochet your shot to knock'em off in bunches! They're coming
fast, and each level is more threatening than the last! Why are
those skulls laughing? Shoot first and ask questions later!

Drop rock has a few original ideas here and there, but the overall game is
very disappointing and profoundly bland looking.
This type of game usually screams for a great soundtrack and
a dynamic and addictive gameplay - and Drop Rock lacks all the above...
Levels are repetitive, agonizingly boring and the soundtrack is
entirely forgettable.
I mean, Data East had some really interesting
ingredients here and borrowed ideas from Breakout
or Puzzle Bobble - but like Izumi's condition, the end result
is a joyless nightmare.
I would advise everyone to avoid this game...
