Digital Champ is a first-person perspective boxing game by
Naxat Soft that, unlike many other fighting games at the time,
shows the action through the eyes of the
fighter in a way similar to Nintendo's popular Punch Out!!.
As a result, the controls are fairly simple and straight forward -
the directional pad is used to aim, dodge, guard or
block, and each action button controls the corresponding hand (left or right).
Holding any of the action buttons for a short amount of time also releases a powerful
super-punch for maximum damage.
Digital Champ features a short selection of boxers to fight, from Marciano
(based on Rocky Balboa) to the strong Mick (who shares a close resemblance
to Mohamed Ali). As expected, each opponent comes with
his own set of skills and attack patterns.

Digital Champ was probably an eye candy back in 1989 - the boxers
are fairly large on screen and cover nearly half of the view.
Thinking about it, not many games from the 8-bit era featured
a first-person perspective view, and this for obvious
technical reasons. And for this, I give this game a round of
aploys. Unfortunately, this is where the praising stops.
Digital Champ quickly becomes annoyingly bland and repetitive - the
action isn't especially intense and fights just drag on for too long.
Oh, and some of the first fights can be won by only using the auto-fire!
Looking at the game cover art, I always wondered if the fighters
are actual robots - but I never managed to complete the game
to find out. All in all, although there are nice touches here and there,
such as the bruises and injuries visible on the opponent's faces,
Digital Champ is really average. I will wrap up this review
with my favorite Mick quote : "Your lucky punch can't even phase me".
Engrish is awesome.
