Chibi Maruko-Chan Quiz De Pīhyara is a platform/quiz
game by Namco. The game is based on a popular
Japanese TV series for young children, and stars a cute
little girl nicknamed Maruko. She lives together
with her elder sister, parents and grandparents and the game
starts when one of her friend is abducted by a race of weird robotic aliens.
Chibi Maruko-Chan decides to launch her own rescue mission
to save her. Stages are built around a traditional
side-scrolling action gameplay - Maruko walks
around each level and defeats enemies by jumping
over their heads, or by hitting them with magic
stars hidden inside her hat. But the game has a major twist -
quiz questions appear on top of the screen with four
possible answers. Each answer has a letter and a color
associated with it and Maruko must destroy
the colored robot corresponding to the right answer in order
to carry on her mission.
Each sub-stage features eight questions, and Maruko
can take all the damage in the world as long as she doesn't
fail to answer three questions within a time limit.
A white rabbit appears from time to time and helps our
friend in her rescue mission by releasing bonus icons.

Chibi Maruko-Chan was a popular manga series by Momoko Sakura
(published in 1986), and was later adapted into an animation series.
The title can be translated as 'little Maruko', due to Maruko's
little size.
The series has spawned countless video games such as
Chibi Marukochan okodukai daisakusen! (GameBoy, 1990),
Chibi Marukochan Harikiri 365 Days (SuperFamicom, 1991),
Chibi Marukochan Wakuwaku Shopping(Megadrive, 1992) and
Chibi Marukochan: mezase! minami no island! (SuperFamicom, 1995)

Chibi Maruko-Chan Quiz De Pīhyara is a fun game but
you must be warned - all the quiz questions are in Japanese,
and based on Japanese culture at the time.
So chances are you will quickly fail to answer
the questions and be greeted by an unpleasant
'Game Over' screen as a result.
If you manage to get through the quiz aspect of the
game, you'll find that Chibi Maruko-Chan Quiz De Pīhyara
was aimed at a young audience. Stages are really linear and
you quickly end up doing the same thing again and again.
All in all, pass on this game if you don't speak/read or
are familiar with the Japanese culture from the 90's.
For all the others, Chibi Maruko-Chan Quiz De Pīhyara
is a nice curiosity but not much else.
