Motorbike racing game

Bari Bari Densetsu is a motorbike racing game by Taito and is based on a popular Japanese manga series published by Koudansha. It features a young motorbike racer called Gun Koma and offers different play modes. The player can either compete in a World Grand Prix where each race is preceded by a qualification phase. In this mode, Gun must qualify and be in the first seven to race. A training option, called the Travel Mode, is available and gives the player the opportunity to pick a track of his choice and to train on any of the sixteen races offered by the game. The bikes can also be customized and tuned up to handle new weather conditions or different type of tracks. Many elements can be edited, from tires to engine and brakes.

Bari Bari Densetsu was a Japanese manga published by Koudansha. The original art work was done by manga-ka Shigeno Shuichi, creator of other Japanese comic books such as the popular Initial D. Two animated videos (OAVs) are also available and were produced in 1986. Apparently Gun Koma (the hero of Bari Bari Densetsu) can be unlocked in Namco's game Moto GP for Sony's Playstation 2.

Racing is probably the video game genre that suffers the most from technology advances. Every new game system sorts of reinvent the genre and any racing game released before the 3D era is condemned to fall into obscurity. Bari Bari Legend sadly falls into this category. Graphics and animation are smooth and the game is very playable with highly responsive controls. But it has aged, aged a lot, and lost most of its original appeal.
