In the same collection as Super Star Soldier, Fun House released
this soundtrack for Hudson Soft's third Star Soldier game : Final Soldier.
It offers a much better sound quality than Super Star Soldier, thanks to the use
of real instruments such as keyboard, drums, saxophone and electric guitar. Synthesizers
are commonly use in video game soundtracks and the decision here to use them in conjunction
with real instruments definitively adds to the incredible value of this album.
The first six tracks are
arranged versions of Final Soldier's best and most familiar scores. My personal
favorite is probably Open Your Arms, a remix of the excellent ending theme, also
used in other games of the Star Soldier's series. The other remixed tracks are
not bad but their quality is uneven. They have an upbeat, mix of Metal Rock and Jazzy
feel to them, thanks to exciting saxophone performances and electric guitar solos, and
their quality is overall more than correct. They sometimes remind other great soundtracks
such as Winds Of Thunder, especially the sixth track 'Final'.
Then from the seventh track
forward, Fun House included all the original tracks from the game. Their quality
is obviously not comparable to the first six tracks as they use the PC Engine onboard
sound synthesizer. Some people may call this nostalgia, but I am still impressed today
by how they managed to pull off so much so successfully. These old tunes still sound
amazing and do not sound as 'beepy' as other video game systems from the 8-bit era.
All in all,
this soundtrack is very well put together and is a must buy album for fans of
Star Soldier, if you can find it though. But I must confess that, for anybody else,
those scores will probably sound and feel a bit too 'old-school', as some people say.
But it is, in my opinion, another recommended nostalgic treasure.
