Does Super Mario Bros still need an introduction ? Only gamers
who have been leaving in a cave for the last three decades haven't probably
heard about this video game milestone. Super Mario Bros came out in
1985 and was the sequel of Mario Bros. Unlike the first opus
(which only used static screens), the game features a smooth side scrolling
and a much richer world to explore. The heroes of the game are
Nintendo's mascots Mario and Luigi and their mission
is to rescue Princess Peach (aka Princess Toadstool)
captured by the evil reptilian Koopa (aka Bowser). But
their journey will take them across the now familiar landscape of the
Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi can jump and
defeat their enemies by simply landing on their heads. But things do
not stop there and our friends have a lot more in store - they can
run, bash blocks with question marks on them and collect gold coins
or power-ups. These come in different flavors and can give Mario
and Luigi the ability to throw fireballs or become invincible.
Colored mushrooms can also get them to grow in size.
Super Mario Bros counts eight large areas divided into four
sub-stages. The greatest feature of all, however, is the endless
amount of cleverly hidden bonuses, invisible blocks and secret
passageways the game has to offer.

Super Mario Bros is a direct sequel of Mario Bros originally
released in the arcades in 1983 (which was itself a spin-off of the famous
Donkey Kong). Both games share the same graphical look and some
similar traits - green pipes, turtles like ShellCreeper, power blocks,
gold coins etc... However, unlike Mario Bros and its single screens,
Super Mario Bros offers smooth side-scrolling screens and a whole
world to venture. The game was a huge success and still is today the best
selling video game ever made. Countless conversions and sequels followed,
and it would be a hard job to list them here. Let's just mention
Vs. Super Mario Bros. (arcade, 1986) which was an arcade conversion
mixing stages from the first and second Japanese games, or
Famicom Mini: Super Mario Bros. (GameBoyColor, 2004) which was
a re-release for the Game Boy Color.

Super Mario Bros was first released on cartridge in 1985. It was
then re-released for the Famicom Disk System in 1986 (version tested here).
Two other Famicom disk games are worth mentioning though -
Kaettekita Mario Bros (Mario Bros returns) was released in 1988
and is an altered version of the original Mario Bros game and the ultra-rare
All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. (1986) which was a promotional game based
on a popular Japanese radio show in the mid-1980s and featuring some of its artist cast.
Another game worth mentioning is the limited edition of Super Mario Bros,
the yellow Game and Watch version, which was originally a prize given out
to the winners of F1 Grand Prix
tournament held in the 1980s. It was later released for the public in a blue
wide screen edition and a rarer crystal screen version.

teaser text from the American version:
Do you have what it takes to save the Mushroom Princess ?
You'll have to think fast and move even
faster to complete this quest! The
Mushroom Princess is being held captive by the evil Koopa tribe of turtles. It's
up to you to rescue her from the clutches of the Koopa King before time runs
out. But it won't be easy. To get to the Princess, you'll have to climb mountains,
cross seas, avoid bottomless pits, fight off turtle soldiers and a host of
black magic traps that only a Koopa King can devise. It's another non-stop
adventure from the SUPER MARIO BROS. !

Super Mario Bros is often considered as the first Mario
game and it certainly deserves the praises it has been getting.
It is a game that time can't defeat. The gameplay, even today,
is simple and magnificent. Graphics also shine with their own light -
they look simple but are in fact cleverly designed and the choice of
colors is astonishing. Same for the now famous soundtrack which
has stuck to the minds of countless players since 1985. Nostalgia
certainly plays a role in the game's appeal, but even so, Super Mario Bros
is one of those rare gems that also inspires new generations of gamers...
A timeless classic and certainly one of the most influential game ever made.
