DiskCard TFD-KIK
Action game

Here is probably one of the fist home version of Taito's
classic action game Kiki Kaikai starring the cute and young
shrine maiden Sayo. It is in a way the conversion of the arcade game
released a year earlier - this version is however very different and
borrows a lot of original elements from the
arcade game (such as story, scenery and
enemies) but goes in its own direction entirely.
Once again, the seven gods of fortune have been kidnapped
and the young maiden must embark on a journey to rescue them from the Dark World.
Like with any other Kiki Kaikai game in the series, Sayo is armed
with a magic duster wand and magic prayer cards. However, cards are only
available in a limited quantities and she must defeat enemies with her
wand to refill her stack. Unlike other games in the series, stages
are vast and are built more like mazes. A gate leading to the
local demon is hidden somewhere in each area and she has to pay a
toll (usually 50 magic cards) to pass through. Before she does,
she must keep in mind that some demons can only be
defeated with those precious magic cards, so she has to make sure to
collect enough before rushing into action. Once a demon is
defeated, and consequently when one of the fortune god is rescued, Sayo
enters a bonus level above the clouds. There, more magic
cards can be collected but beware of the holes hidden
within the fluffy carpet of clouds...

Kiki KaiKai Dotō Hen comes with a really unusual large packaging.
It includes seven plastic figures/stampers (probably representing
Sayo's family members). The back and the instruction
manual shows a teenager girl dressed as Sayo followed
by the name Miki Itō.

Kiki Kaikai Dotō Hen was a delightful surprise. Converting this game for
the Famicom system was probably a difficult task, so Taito went
down another route and decided to create a different game entirely. However,
I was surprised by how vast the Dark World actually is, especially
for a game using the Disk Card format. Some parts are quite repetitive,
but Taito managed to add new enemies and features at the right
spots, and they certainly help the player to not quickly get bored.
Despite its age, this version
still hangs on pretty well and can be fun to play. Sadly it is
quite hard to find nowadays, especially complete with the original
box and figurines...
