Dandy: Zeuon No Fukkatsu is an action/adventure game by Activision
and Pony Canyon.
The legendary beast Zeuon has been forgotten by humanity for centuries and
no one is aware of the struggle ahead. Time passes and the evil is about to return
and Earth must be saved once again. The player takes control of a courageous warrior
armed with a sword and a bow. His journey starts in a small house but it
is only when he leaves this heaven that his journey really begins. A top-down view
displays the surrounding world and the monsters haunting the area. The warrior can
either use his sword for close combat or his bows and arrows (available in limited
quantities) to defeat these threats. Some enemies also drop gems and other health
potions to help the player in his quest. Soon our hero realizes that the world he
is exploring is vast and numerous dungeons, towns and other dark places must be
visited to complete the game.

It is hard to trace Dandy: Zeuon No Fukkatsu's origins. A game called
Dandy Dungeon was published for the Atari 8-bit in 1983 through
the Atari Program Exchange (APX). The author, Jack Palevich, worked
on it as his thesis while he was at MIT. Interestingly, the game actually inspired
Atari's highly popular multi-player arcade game Gauntlet released
in 1985 and they both share a lot in common indeed . Jack Palevich later
sold the rights of Dandy to Electric Dreams Software who released
versions for the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum
in 1986. So it wouldn't be surprising if Activision somehow acquired the
rights in 1988 to release this Famicom Disk version. The game is obviously
different than the original Dandy and has more an adventure feel to it
with outdoor action and towns to visit. But they both feature a similar gameplay,
a character armed with bow and arrows and dungeons to explore.

Dandy: Zeuon No Fukkatsu is intriguing - I couldn't find a non-japanese
release of this game and despite being an Activision game, it seems that
it was only released in Japan. Dandy is surprisingly fun to play and
reminds the likes of Namco's Valkyrie No Densetsu (The Famicom
action/adventure game released in 1986) or Nintendo's Zelda. It
doesn't get anywhere near these games though, but it nevertheless manages to pull
it off with a touch of its own. I only wished your character could move along
diagonal directions and that the game wasn't overall so difficult - monsters keep
reappearing inside dungeons which makes the whole experience a lot more difficult
than it should. But all in all, I think Dandy: Zeuon No Fukkatsu has some
nice features and interesting moments.
