Some players may have heard about Activision's unusual game
Little Computer People released back in 1985. Apple Town Story
is somehow the Japanese version and was released by Square. The man avatar from
the original game was replaced here by a cute little girl and her ginger cat. The
concept of the game is rather simple - the screen shows a slide-view of the inside
of a three-story house. The bedroom is on the top floor and the game starts there
and like every morning, the little girl wakes up at 7:00 am. 'Game'
is a big word here as most of the player's time is spent watching the little
girl and her pet's actions. She will probably wash her teeth, watch some TV, eat
breakfast, write a letter and so on. However, it is possible to interact with her
in limited ways and she will get really bored if the player doesn't. He can give her a
call, send her a letter, feed her ginger kitty with pet food, or even give her a
Famicom game to play. The view also zooms in for special occasions, like
when she plays piano, turn some music on and dance or play cards.

Like most of DOG's titles for the
Famicom Disk System, Apple Town Story comes with a large box and
a fairly nice and colorful instruction manual (picture on the left).

Little Computer People was first released for the Commodore 64
Computer in 1985 and used the famous teaser : 'Human-like beings actually found
living inside computers'. The original game only featured male characters and
each game would have a different variation of him. Not two were supposed to be alike
and a special code was encrypted in every game to make sure their appearance and
personality were 'unique'. It is not obvious if Apple Town Story uses the
same feature or not.

Let's go straight to the point here,
Apple Town Story is an incredible game concept for its time.
However, no one will be amazed today, thanks to all the Japanese Raise & Simulation
games, The Sims, Bandai's Tamagotchis and other digital pets that flooded the
market years ago. Sadly, once you have "played" the game for a couple of hours, or even
less, Apple Town Story becomes really slow and boring.
The amount of actions and reactions
of the little girl and her pet are very limited and you will quickly experience them all.
Passed this point, Apple Town Story becomes a colorful, yet simple, beeping screen saver.
I would only recommend this game to anyone interested to own a piece of Video Game history.
