Ultra box is a series of CDRom Magazines for the PC Engine System
published by Victor Musical Industries. Each episode is more bizarre than the
next and they all feature various goodies such as mini-games, short animations, game
catalogs and things that just can't be described in words. The issue proposes the
second episode of the Digital comic Custo started in the previous volume.
It tells the story of a group of archaeologist who, in the 1920s, discover mysterious
crystals hidden inside some ancient ruins.
Making of Dorayaki Quest is another digital comic/adventure
game that tells the story of a small company making video games! The player
must guide the development team and create a hit... or a huge flop.
Princess of PC Engine is a library of PC Engine heroines such
as Valis or Valkyrie no Densetsu with illustrations and
personal data.
Gamen Victor 3 is a simple side scrolling shooter staring Victor,
the Ultra Box's mascot already featured in the first two volumes.
This time around he flies a futuristic
motorbike and travels the world.
Finally, the compilation also includes
a couple of dating simulations, a traditional Japanese/Chinese horoscope,
the Jan Jan Box with readers' drawings and art, and a PC Engine
collection section with game reviews and 'coming soon' trailers
(Zero 4 Champ, Kaizo Chonin Shubibinman 2 and Toy Shop Boys).

The Ultra Box series is hard to describe... this issue offers
a fun role playing game with UFOs that features full screen animations
and excellent cartoony graphics. I also quite like the horizontal shooter too but
don't expect anything amazing. But all in all, Ultra Box is more
a collector's item than a source of fun, there isn't much there
especially if you don't understand or can't read Japanese. You
should only get it if are looking for that extra something special
for your PC Engine collection or as an unusual piece of
Japanese video game history.
