Ultra box is a series of CDRom Magazines for the PC Engine System
published by Victor Musical Industries. Each episode is more bizarre than the
next and they all feature various goodies such as mini-games, short animations,
game catalogs and things that just can't be described in words. This issue features
the first episode of an adventure game called Custo. It tells the story of a
group of archaeologists who,
in the 1920s, find mysterious crystals hidden deep inside ancient ruins.
They soon become the target of the military and embark on a journey to
investigate the mysteries of the enchant civilization and also the sudden
appearance of weird UFOs. The compilation also features a short game staring
the cute Gamen Victor - once again he must escape an army of
Yakuzas but this time around he does it on his super-motorbike.
A simple puzzle game featuring small Daruma statues is also included.
Finally, the compilation features a couple
of dating simulations, a traditional Japanese/Chinese horoscope,
the Jan Jan Box with readers' drawings and art, and a PC Engine
collection section with game reviews and 'coming soon' trailers
(Ranma 1/2, Sangokushi and Ys III).

The Ultra Box series is hard to describe... this issue
offers a fun role playing game with UFOs that features full screen
animations and excellent cartoony graphics. I also quite like the
motorbike game - but don't get over excited, there's nothing groundbreaking
about it. All in all, Ultra Box is more a collector's item than
a source of fun, there isn't much there especially if you don't understand
or can't read Japanese. You should only get it if are looking for that
extra something special for your PC Engine collection or as an
unusual piece of Japanese video game history.
