Here is Kaizō Chōnin Shubibinman 3, the third episode of the Shubibinman series featuring Tasuke and the cute ginger haired Kyapiko. The story starts when our two heroes enjoy a well deserved vacation break on a sunny beach. But a curious spaceship pierces the clouds overhead and flies at full speed towards the city. Onboard, a princess from a distant world and her two bodyguards are on a mission to awake some evil forces. Our two heroes embark again on a new mission to save the world with the help of their power suits and swords. They can also charge up a powerful ball of energy by holding the fire button and with enough training, time and patience, players can even slightly control the direction and motion of the lethal attack. Levels are incredibly structured and tons of original features get constantly thrown at the player. For instance, the first stage sees our hero piloting a huge running robot a some point, taking down enemies with a lighting bolt gun. A two simultaneous players mode is available and some parts of the game offers intense teamplay action.

Shubibinman 3 is a fantastic game and certainly the best opus of the series (if we don't include the Super Famicom episode). I actually wonder if some people from Treasure were not involved during the game development. Some bosses certainly reminded me of the ones found in titles such as Gunstar Heroes released in 1993, such as the segmented snowmen or the rotating balls of energy found around the first stage. Something about the stages structure also has this "Treasure" touch, with bosses scattered around every area in no specific order. Anyway, I'm probably seeing too much into this, but it is a good sign and it certainly indicates that Shubibinman 3 is an excellent action game. It however lacks a little something that could have make it a great game. The difficulty is also overall very easy - the balls of energy cause too much damage overall and can take some bosses down in a blink of an eye. Then some stages can be very monotonous and repetitive at times. Shubibinman 3 yet remains one of the best action game available for the PC Engine system. Do not miss it !
