Fighting Game

Ranma 1/2: Datō Ganso Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū is a one-on-one fighting game by Masaya and is the third in the trilogy for the PC Engine system. The story mode gets the player to control Ranma Saotome, a cursed boy who turns into a girl when hit with cold water. The games starts when Ranma and Happosai, the pervert grandmaster, spend some time in a traditional Japanese bath. Ranma knocks the old man down as he tries to climb the separation wall to have a peak at the girl's side. But Happosai doesn't give up that easily and splashes the poor boy who instantly turns into Ranma-girl. This event triggers the first of a long list of one-on-one fights featuring Happosai, Kodachi Kuno, Ukyo Kuonji, Ryoga Hibiki and so forth... Interestingly, each fight comes with its special sets of moves - Ranma can throw traditional kicks and punches, but also throw balloons against Ukyo Kuonji or change into Ranma-girl. Special moves can also be triggered by holding down the attack button for a short amount of time. Finally, a battle mode is included and gives two players the opportunity to compete against each other.

Ranma 1/2: Datō Ganso Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū isn't much of a fighting game. Any hardcore fan of Street Fighter should pass on this one, there is nothing there to quench their thirst. Ranma 1/2 uses instead simple moves and no doubt dedicated players will eventually get the hang of it - but most of it is too much effort for too little payoff. Opponents just hop around and run through the same moves. But the game is faithful to its source material and should nevertheless provide some fun to fans of the series. All in all, Ranma 1/2 is a simple and yet correct fighter with great cinematics and an overall ambiance close to the original animated series.
