Dating Simulation

Noriko was the first CDRom² ever released for the PC Engine system. It features the japanese singer pop singer Noriko Ogawa, who was just 15 years back in 1988. The games starts with an invitation to one of her live concert. The player, the Lucky Boy as called in the game, will take a day out and probably end up on a date with the young and cute singer. On screen choices gets him to slightly orient the story and the series of events. Any step in the wrong direction will end in an unfair Game Over. At the end of the (long) concert, Lucky Boy finds his way to Noriko's lounge and she agrees to go on a date with him. He will then be up to him to find the best location to go to, take pictures and have fun. Things will carry on in the evening and may even end up in Noriko's apartment when the two kids will play intense games of Paper, Rock and Scissors.

Noriko is an interesting game. Keep in mind it was released back in 1988 where 2 Mbits HuCards were the norm. It is however a curious choice for a system launching title, but I guess it shows what the CDRom² system was capable of with full screen digitized graphics and CD quality musics and songs. Not much knowledge of japanese is needed to play the game though, but it is far from being a breakthrough in video game entertainment. As a side note, I found interesting that the game ends with the words : "This is not a true story". Just in case if those young kids back in 1988 really believed they went out on a date with their cute and favourite pop singer. All in all, Noriko it is a nice collection piece.
