Horror Story is the conversion of Toaplan's action game release in the arcades in 1989. The player takes control of a sort of sun-glasses wearing ghost-chaser ( or two at the same time during the two players simultaneous-mode ) who seems to be lost in a traditional chinese ghost world. Your main weapon is a gun which can be heavily upgraded during the game, from 2-ways gun, to flame-lasers or rockets. Our heroes have another secret weapon : they can jump on their enemies' heads to kill them ( This powerful technique is also used by our favorite plumber who could also flatten evil turtles and crazy mushrooms ). Another important ability of the character is the double-jump (very similar to the jump found in Capcom's Chohmakaimura for the Super Famicom ). This special technique will help you in more than one occasion : it will allow you, for instance, to access unreachable platforms or reach bosses' weak points. Enemies vary from blue ghosts riding bicycles to flying half-skeleton archers. End of stage bosses can be quite big and impressive like the huge Golden dragon from the first level.

Horror Story is a very uncommon game. Toaplan is famous for its excellent shooters, but not much for its platformers and I only heard about this PC Engine version only recently. This title is somehow designed like a shooter, the scrolling being continuous and only stopping for boss encounters. Horror Story is sadly uneven, graphics are well drawn in general but they sometimes look unfinished and kind of rushed. It is overall fun, despite being very difficult, and the two simultaneous players mode is certainly a great feature. All in all, this conversion is more than correct and Nec Avenue did a great job. But the arcade game was average and this version just follows its footsteps.
