Gate of Thunder is an intense horizontal shooter by Red and published by Hudson Soft. The player takes the role of Hawk, a member of the police force and pilots the Hunting Dog, an advanced interceptor fighter. His perilous missions will take him through seven long and intense stages. The ship uses three main ungradable weapons that can be switched at anytime during the game as necessary. The Wild Cat, a secondary ship, appears from time to time during mission and drops off precious new weaponry such as secondary flying pods particularly handy to clean up the fighter's tail. Gate of Thunder features an intense metal soundtrack which certainly contributes to the game's popularity among fans of the genre.

Gate of Thunder is a fast and mind-blowing shooter. Stages are really well designed, the overall ambience is incredible and the gameplay is flawless. Graphics, and this is sort of Red's trademark, are highly detailed and varied. The introduction sequence can be a bit cheesy though, especially the terrible close up where Hawk takes off his glasses, Good grief, this is above and beyond cheesiness... Bosses are impressive too but their attack patterns could have been much better I think... Gate Of Thunder is often compared to Thunder Force 3 for the Sega's Megadrive, and they obviously share a lot in common - but they are both different games and my heart goes for Thunder Force... All in all, Gate Of Thunder is pure adrenaline and I highly recommend it to any fan of the genre salivating for more!
