God Panic is a cool and weird shooter by Teichiku. You take
control of a kind of flying-cat (hard to tell as he is wearing
a sort of blue-ninja uniform, but those are definitively cat ears) and you must destroy really weird
enemies. They spread from brides riding huge motorbikes to
geishas removing their kimonos when hit and muscled wrestlers throwing their swet at you.
Backgrounds are amazing too, in the second
stage, you will fly over a huge girl laying down on the beach !
You start with a simple vulcan-gun witch can be upgraded by picking the
correct power-up icon hidden in chests along the way. Other
special items allow you to increase your life, or add another
bomb to your existing stock. Those bombs will fire huge coins and
clean up most of the screen when used. Finally, most of the enemies encountered
in God Panic are inspired the japanese folklore, but not
only and you will also be confronted to flying-cars and scared paysans throwing
fireballs at you.

I personnaly think God Panic is a good and fun shooter.
It looks and feels very simple : graphics are cute but somehow
simpler than what our eyes are used to, or at least compared to ther PC Engine titles,
and gameplay is fun
even if rather slow. Nevertheless, it offers some weird and
unusual elements. Stop reading if you so not want me to spoil the game for you.
I especially like when you finally reach the first end
of the game. Everything starts again, from the first stage, but with
wacky and dark graphics. Like if the fact of defeating the
gods sort of messed-up the whole world, and it is now your duty to fix
what you've just done and defeat all the evil spirits you just unleashed.
I know, I made this up, but I'm sure the real game story is not far
from this. Or maybe they used this trick to throw a few more levels at
you for peanuts. But I doubt it.
God Panic is also usually very cheap, so why not get it and
enjoy some basic but fun shooting action in a world of flying pigs and
red choco-pudding airships ? You know it makes sense.
