Action / Adventure game

Future Boy Conan is based on a very popular animation series in Japan and created by the now world famous Hayao Miyazaki. In a non so distant future, most of Earth inhabitants have been wiped out by a powerful new weapon. Humanity, in a last attempt to leave the condemned world, tries to flee to the stars without success. Conan, a ten years old boy, is a direct descendent of the people who, onboard spaceships, tried to escape. The original animation tells the story of Conan, and his cute friend Lana, and their adventures in this new devasted world. They are both pursued by the people of Industria who have only one goal in mind, to capture Lana's grand father who, they think, know the secret of a special weapon. The game puts the player in the shoes of Conan. The young boy, like other kids, has strange powers. He can communicate with many animals and has also an unusual strength. This feature is also present in this side scrolling action game and most of the stages unfold following the anime's story. Conan can run, jump and kick his enemies. He can also use a limited stock of spears.

Future Boy Conan has some very impressive cut-scenes and closely follows the animation series. However the game is sadly a total let down. Graphics are very simple and sprites are tinny. Stages are also bland and short. Understand here that there will often be no more than a handfull of enemies inbetween you and the end of a stage... Things get a little more interesting later in the game but nothing outstanding. I really tried to like this game due to its origins, but fans of the series will be left wanting more. A fun but disappointing title.
